Summer is the season for travel, family outings, trips to waterparks and camping. Kids have a vacation, the sun shines happily and the season demands that you break the routine and take a trip. But as the season gains momentum, the blinding glare is ought to get stronger.

Our eyes are one of the most sensitive and highly exposed organs. Always wear a hat or carry an umbrella to shade your eyes from the sun. Adopt this easy eye care routine to keep them healthy.

  • Stay hydrated: It is very vital that you keep your skin and eyes hydrated. Drink minimum 8-10 glasses of water and incorporate foods like cucumber, buttermilk, watermelon etc. that balance the body fluids.
  • Sun Glasses: The dreadful ultraviolet radiations from the sun cause severe eye ailments. Too much exposure to warm wind is harmful for the eyes and damages the cornea. Always prefer slightly bigger sized sun-glasses with a proper UV-blocking coating, which safeguards the eyes and the sensitive skin around them. Ask for glasses that certify to block at least 98% UV rays. This is a must for travellers who are exposed to sun rays for longer hours. For those who join swimming camps or love water parks, swimming glasses are a must. Swimming glasses act as a double protection against sun rays and also the chlorine in the water.
  • Avoid Dryness: The tear film in eyes evaporates faster due to longer hours in air-conditioning and also if the eyes are exposed to warm air and sunlight. This condition is called Dry Eye and causes sever itching and irritation. Use artificial tear drop which are available at every pharmacy or prescribed by a doctor, to keep your eyes moist.
  • Peel Will Heal: Save the banana peel for soothing your eyes. Place a peel on closed eyes, with the inner part covering the entire eye. Do this at least thrice a week for 3-5 mins. Fresh banana peel absorbs the heat from the eyes, moisturises the skin and cures puffy eyes.
  • Remove Eye Make-up: Wearing eye cosmetics like mascara, eyeliner (liquid or pencil), eye shadow and kajal or kohl for prolonged hours causes damage to your eyes. The ingredients in these cosmetics that make them stay longer without smudging gives you the perfect look all day. However, it also dries up the eye-lids and under-eye line. Wipe the eyes clean before you hit the bed.
  • Say Aye Aloe! – Aloe Vera is a wild tropical plant that thrives on very less water. The gel inside the aloe vera leaves has many medicinal benefits especially for the skin and hair. If you have a plant at home, cut a piece and scrape the thorns on the sides. Slice the piece horizontally into a thin sheet and carefully place it on your closed eyes. Keep it for 5 mins and wash off with cool water. Aloe gel treats heat rashes, recovers delicate skin over eyes and has a soothing effect.
  • Eat healthy: Incorporate vitamin A rich foods in your daily diet. Vitamin A has to be the best buddy for your eyes. Carrots. Papaya, mangoes, leafy vegetables, and fish are rich in sources of vitamin A. Mangoes contain 21% vitamin A and will be available in plenty this season.
  • Eye Exercise: Slowly splash some clean water in your eyes. Now fill your mouth with as much water as you can and rinse your eyes again while you keep mouth full with water. Spit out the water after the exercise. Repeat this 2-3 times. This exercise is called Netra Dhauti. It calms the eyes, increases blood flow and also has a relaxing effect on headaches

Protecting your eyes is as essential as taking care of the rest of your body. For those who work longer hours in front of a desktop or laptop, take breaks from time to time and don’t forget to Blink. Don’t let the summer heat distress your eyes and dampen your mood. Let them rest and rejuvenate regularly.
